Common questions
Straight answers
Does this replace health insurance? +
No, and we'll be upfront about that. This is a supplemental plan that pays you cash when you're hospitalized. It is not major medical insurance, doesn't pay providers directly, and doesn't satisfy ACA minimum essential coverage requirements. What it does: puts cash in your hands fast when an unexpected hospital event would otherwise wreck your finances.
Who is this actually a good fit for? +
This plan works for a wide range of people. If you have a high-deductible health plan, one hospital stay could wipe out your entire deductible before your insurance pays a dollar. If you're self-employed, a gig worker, or a 1099 contractor, you may have bare-bones or no coverage at all. If you're on Medicare, even a strong plan leaves out-of-pocket exposure including per-day copays, deductibles, and daily expenses that Medicare was never designed to cover. And if you have no coverage at all, this gives you a meaningful cash safety net. The common thread is simple: anyone who'd face real financial pain if they ended up in the hospital.
Are pre-existing conditions covered? +
There's a 6-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions, defined as conditions for which you received treatment or medical advice in the 6 months before your effective date. After 6 months, those conditions are covered like anything else. Some serious conditions identified in the health questionnaire will result in a declined application.
How does the cash actually get paid to me? +
You file a claim after your hospital discharge. Heartland National processes it and sends payment directly to you, not to the hospital. No network requirement, no pre-authorization needed. Use the cash for your deductible, your mortgage, groceries, whatever you need.
I already have health insurance. Does this still make sense? +
Often yes, especially if your deductible is $2,000 or higher. A 5-day hospital stay could cost you that entire deductible before your insurance pays a dollar. This plan pays you cash on top of whatever your primary insurance covers, it doesn't reduce your other benefits or conflict with existing coverage.
What states is this available in? +
Currently available in Arizona, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Select your state in the quote builder to confirm availability.
Do I need insurance to qualify? +
No. You do not need existing health insurance to apply. This plan is open to anyone ages 18 to 85, insured or not. A short health questionnaire is required for most applicants. If you're between ages 64 and a half and 65 and a half, the base plan is guaranteed issue with no health questions.
How do I receive the money? +
After you're discharged from the hospital, you file a claim with Heartland National Life Insurance Company. Once approved, the cash benefit is paid directly to you, not to the hospital or any provider. Most claims are processed and paid within a few business days.
What can I use the money for? +
Anything you need. There are no restrictions. Most people use it to cover their deductible, copays, or medical bills. But plenty use it for rent, groceries, utilities, or lost income while they were out of work. It's your cash, and you decide where it goes.
